1.1. Alexandrite Laser Module
Alexandrite laser has a higher coefficient of absorption in melanine than Nd:YAG. This
characteristic gives the Alexandrite laser two main advantages:
To be more aggressive and effective on hair, even treating fair hair with a low quantity of
melanin, like thin and/or blond or red hairs.
The possibility to treat pigmented lesions more efficiently.
On the other hand, Alexandrite’s higher coefficient of absorption in melanin enhances risks of side
effects. Melanin is one of the main chromophores in human skin and its concentration is more as
skin phototype increases. Alexandrite is much more aggressive on skin surrounding the pigmented spot or hairs than Nd:YAG.
This characteristic makes the Alexandrite laser less suitable for treatment of phototypes from IV to VI or very tanned skin. Today
DEKA improves, as none before, the performances of the Alexandrite laser and reaches unrivalled speeds in hair removal, with
an operative frequency of 3 Hz!!
Nd:YAG Laser Module
DEKA was the first company to introduce in 1998 the use of Long-pulsed Nd:YAG lasers for hair removal and vascular lesions.
Today, it is well known that Nd:YAG wavelength at 1064 nm is the safest for darkest skin types (more than III). This is due to the
ability of 1064 nm to penetrate human skin thanks to lower absorption by melanin and to reach the deepest parts of the hair
follicle, where all the germinative parts reside. According to the absorption patterns of melanin and oxyhemoglobin, the
penetration of 1064 nm (the Nd:YAG laser wavelength) is several millimetres into the skin, more than any other laser wavelength,
such as Ruby, Alexandrite and Diodes. Despite of this low absorption of melanin, its effectiveness can be balanced choosing a
pulse with the right characteristics, in terms of energy, duration and pulse structure. Also the spot diameter is important in
determining the results, but this last parameter is not as important as for other wavelengths. Only the right choice of parameters
allows Long-pulsed Nd:YAG, as Synchro REPLA:Y, to be a perfect system for hair removal or for other applications such as
vascular treatments, especially for leg telangiectasias. The Nd:YAG laser power is delivered through an optical fibre which is
connected directly in the Nd:YAG laser handpieces. The handpiece connection is very quick and the system recognizes which
type of handpiece the user has connected.
Handpieces
Nd:YAG and Alexandrite lasers are delivered with the same fibre optic. The user can choose among ten handpieces with spot
diameters from 2.5 mm up to 20 mm. In the paragraph 1.3.3.3 we indicate the suggested use for each handpiece. All handpieces
have two important integrated technologies: the “Top-Hat Fluence Emission Technology”, which guarantees uniform fluence
on all the spot area, and the “Automatic Spot Size Recognition System” which allows Synchro REPLA:Y to recognise the
conneceted handpiece. All the handpieces are titanium made for being more resistant and lighter during use.
Smart Cooler Handpiece (N722A1)
The “Handpiece holder with Contact Cooling” integrates a skin contact cooling
system which uses Peltier technology. The picture on the right shows the handpiece
holder with cables and connectors. This cooling handpiece is optional.
N722A1
Handpiece Adaptor for SmartCryo Connection
(N88201)
A second optional “Handpiece adaptor with SmartCryo connection” is suggested for
all practitioners who prefer to use an external air cooling system. The handpiece has
a piping system which delivers air from the SmartCryo cooling system to the
treatment area. “Handpiece holder for SmartCryo” is shown in the side picture. This
handpiece adaptor is optional.
Laser Handpieces
In the following two tables we characteristics of each handpiece is presented to drive the user In choosing the best handpiece for
it’s applications. Take in consideration that the huge number of handpieces permit to choose the ones really needed.
We remind here that the wider spot sizes are delivering higher levels of energy, when the fluence is constant, and this must be
considered when used on the darkest skins. Generally speaking we could say that darker is the skin and smaller the spot size
should be in order to reduce the possible side effects.
A particular note must be done for the use of 2.5 and 5 mm spot sizes for vascular application with long-pulse Nd:YAG. Because
the 5 mm spot delivers twice the energy of a 2.5 mm (as the same fluence is set) we recommend using the 5 mm spot only for
legs and not on the face.

FT Pulsed Lamp
The FT handpiece is different from the UPL DEKA handpieces. The differences are in the lamp shape (linear instead being U-
shaped) and in the filters. This is the main advantage of FT lamps where the operator can easily change the filter without
changing handpiece (removable filters with magnetic connection). On the other
hand, the warranty of the handpiece lamp is shorter: 30,000 shots.
One other important point about the FT handpiece is its integrated skin cooling
system, the delivery sapphire is
Peltier cooled down to 4°C and the
cooling temperature can be
adjusted by the display. The user
can increase, decrease or switch
off the cooling according to the
treatment area and the patient
sensitivity. Moreover, other important options are allowed as the selection of how
divide the pulse in subpulses (1-3), the delay between subpulses, the total pulse
length, the fluence and the pulse rate.
Thanks to ten different filters, FT flash lamp is indicated for hair removal, for vascular and pigmented lesions treatments and for
photorejuvenation. In this configuration the available filters have the following spectra of emission:
500 – 1200 nm suggested for fair phototypes
600 – 1200 nm suggested for darker phototypes
520 – 1200 nm suggested for fair phototypes
650 – 1200 nm suggested for darker phototypes
550 – 1200 nm suggested for fair phototypes
For each of the above spectra of emission there are two filters available with different spot area: 6.2 cm2 or 3.1 cm2.
Optical Fibre
The special optical fibre which deliveres laser energy from Synchro REPLA:Y to the handpiece is made of silica.
This makes the fiber fragile consequently it is protected with a strongly reinforced cover of its entire fibre length in
order to avoid any damage. Important note: Excellium 3.4, Excellium HP, Premium 2.4.2 and Premium 1.4.2 have
different fiber and handpieces than One 1.7 and One 0.7.
Safety Glasses
All people present in the room where the laser is operational, could be affected by laser radiation exposure. For this reason they
must wear safety glasses.
DEKA provides with every laser system specific safety eyewear which are appropriate for the delivered wavelengths, the power
and the working modes. All glasses are compliant with European Community standard norm EN 207.
EN 207 guarantees protection at two requirement levels:
Requirements related to Optical Density OD (which expresses the decrease of light power passing through an optical filter)
Requirements related to the mode of emission of laser radiation: continuous, pulsed, Q-switched.
Synchro REPLA:Y has three different kinds of glasses as follow:
FT Flash Lamp protective glasses
Nd:YAG and Alexandrite protective glasses
Laser and FT Flash Lamp blind protective glasses
for patient
Technical features
In the following tables the most important characteristics of Synchro REPLA:Y are shown, the supply voltage is ONLY 230 Vac.
The characteristics of the different sources have been separated in order to well highlight the most important features. Actually
the huge number of models offer a lot of different solutions to be taylored on the doctor’s needs. We suggest considering the first
table in order to well understand the main differences among the models:
